“Hello there”
“May the 4th is Star Wars Day.” For fans of the franchise, it’s like Christmas. In Dublin, and indeed around the world, there are celebrations, gatherings, and generally nerdy things to do.

1) Free Comic Book Day

“A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.” Free Comic Book Day takes place every year on the first Saturday in May. This year, that coincides with Star Wars Day. Double the geek for half the effort.

Local comic book stores, including Big Bang Comics, Dublin City Comics, Forbidden Planet and Sub City Comics generally take part (but check with the individual stores closer to the day, not everyone has announced it). There are a large variety of free comics for the day, with multiple genres and age ratings.

Coincidentally, these stores tend to offer discounts and promotions on Star Wars items on May the 4th.

2) Meet some villains

“You underestimate the power of the dark side.” Traditionally, the 501st Legion, a charity group that dresses up as the bad guys from the franchise, are present in the city in some way, shape or form. In the past, this has been at the Disney Store on Grafton Street, but they could also appear elsewhere.

3) Relive the experience

“Now this is pod racing!” The Phantom Menace is returning to cinemas for its 25th anniversary (and now I feel old). Released in 1999, Episode I stars Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson as they find a young Anakin Skywalker on Tatooine. If you’ve never seen it, this is a great chance,

While not confirmed, the 501st might be there because of the occasion.

4) Candlelight concert

“I’m one with the Force and the Force is with me.” The RTÉ concert orchestra is playing in the Helix in DCU, performing the music of the legendary John Williams. This. Is a rare opportunity to embrace the music from Star Wars in a new and intimate way.

Enjoy the day, and May the Force Be With You.
