C1 EDUCATIONAL PUBLICATION: An Altermodern Abecedarium

An abecedarium (or simply an ABC) is a compilation of words—and their meanings—arranged alphabetically.

Our “alter-modern/altermodern” abecedarium is a collection of words that pertain to the life and work of Irish writer, Gaelic revivalist, and spiritual occultist, William Butler Yeats (1865-1939), as it is presented to the visitor at the National Library of Ireland.

This abecedarium is titularly described as alter-modern/altermodern (“alter,” in the sense of “other,” from Old English ōther, of Germanic origin; related to Dutch and German ander, from an Indo-European root meaning “different,” and “modern, in the sense of relating to the present or recent times, as opposed to the distant past) precisely in the manner that Yeats’ own life and work was:

“The mystical life is the centre of all that I do and all that I think and all that I write.”

—William Butler Yeats, Letter to John O’Leary (1892)
