Why choose an English Bildungsurlaub course in Dublin?

Studying in Ireland combines focused English lessons with opportunities to practise the language beyond the classroom. Our approach develops confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing through interactive lessons, practical tasks and conversation. Guided social and cultural activities complement the language programme.

Your Bildungsurlaub course: 25 + 5 full hours

Each week includes 25 full hours of English tuition through our intensive General English programme (GE25) and 5 additional, compulsory hours of teacher-led social and cultural learning. That is 30 complete 60-minute hours per week. Breaks, independent study and optional excursions do not count towards these hours.

Learning activities explore language and culture in context. The programme also addresses relevant historical, cultural and social topics, with the additional content requirements for Hessen incorporated into the submitted academic programme. A detailed timetable is available on request.

Explore our Intensive General English (GE25) course.

Five-day and ten-day Bildungsurlaub options

  • 5 days (one week): an intensive English course from Monday to Friday, with the supervised cultural-learning component.
  • 10 days (two weeks): two consecutive course weeks, normally Monday to Friday, with a weekend between them.

Courses generally begin on Mondays, except during school closures and public holidays. Tell us your preferred dates so that we can confirm the relevant timetable, programme format and places.

How to apply for Bildungsurlaub in Germany

Bildungsurlaub (also known as Bildungszeit vai Bildungsfreistellung in some states) enables eligible employees to take educational leave for qualifying training. The rules are set by the relevant German federal state, not by one nationwide application law. Conditions can differ for course recognition, employer notice periods, the number of days available and the documents required.

Four steps to plan your educational leave

  1. Check your Bundesland’s rules. Confirm your entitlement and the notice period with your employer or the relevant state authority.
  2. Choose a course. Let ISI Dublin know your Bundesland, preferred dates, English level and whether you need a 5- or 10-day format.
  3. Request the paperwork. Ask us for the course description, timetable and supporting documents required for your application.
  4. Apply to your employer. Submit the documents within your state’s deadline and confirm your enrolment arrangements with ISI Dublin.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take Bildungsurlaub to study English in Ireland?

English language training abroad may qualify under the rules of a German federal state. Your individual eligibility and the documents needed depend on the Bundesland, the particular course and the dates.

Does my employer pay for the course?

Where the relevant law grants paid educational leave, eligible employees generally continue to receive their salary during approved leave. Tuition, travel and accommodation are normally paid by the participant unless the employer agrees to contribute. Check the rules that apply to your employment.

How far in advance should I apply?

Notice periods vary by Bundesland. Contact us early enough to obtain the course paperwork and submit your request to your employer by the applicable deadline.

Does the course include 30 full hours each week?

Yes. The Bildungsurlaub programme consists of 25 full hours of taught English and 5 mandatory full hours of teacher-led cultural and social learning. Independent self-study and breaks are excluded.

Can I book accommodation?

Yes. Please tell us if you would like accommodation options alongside your English course. Availability and pricing are confirmed separately.

How do I find the right English level?
